"With an image of liberation as the goal the wise abandon darkness and cherish light, leave petty security behind and seek freedom from attachment."
(Dhammapada 87 - Paṇḍitavagga)
Dhammanikhom combines several aspects on different levels.
Dhammanikhom considers itself very fortunate and grateful to be rooted in the long tradition of Theravada Buddhism in both Thailand and Sri Lanka.
It is truly a blessing to be able to learn from the experience, wisdom, courage, and perseverance of these centuries-old traditions. Combining this with the demands of a modern, Western world is vital Dhamma practice.
Furthermore, Dhammanikhom is both a nunnery (Bhikkhunī-Ārāma) and a Vipassana meditation center.
As a nunnery, Dhammanikhom belongs to the ordination lineage of the Sinhalese Bhikkhuni Sangha (Dambulla Siam Mahanikaya), and as a meditation center, it follows the Vipassana tradition of the Most Venerable Phra Prom Mongkol Vi (Venerable Phra Ajarn Tong Sirimangalo).
The Buddha always spoke of the so-called Fourfold Assembly, consisting of monks, nuns, male lay followers, and female lay followers. Each of these four pillars is important and has specific tasks and responsibilities. It is of great importance to walk the Path together, to respect and support one another.
The Enlightened Buddha did not teach dogma, but observed nature very deeply. His teachings are timeless and can be experienced by anyone who looks closely. Training the heart is freely and openly available to anyone who is interested, regardless of age, gender, social or regional background...because the laws of nature apply everywhere.
How Dhammanikhom came into being and came to the small village of Heinersbrück in Brandenburg is a story of trust, perseverance, belief in wholesomeness and heartfelt values, and the energetic and generous support of many people. Step by step, over the years, the nunnery and meditation center has developed from nothing.
