Most Venerable Phra Prom Mongkol Vi

(Ven. Phra Ajarn Tong Sirimangalo)

Venerable Phra Ajarn Tong Sirimangalo was born in 1923 and has given his whole life to the practice and dissemination of Vipassana meditation. In the year of 1934 he ordained as a novice and in 1944 he was fully ordained as a monk. In the 1950s he was sent to Wat Mahathat in Bangkok for one year as the only representative of the Northern-Thai Sangha to practice Vipassana meditation based on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness. In the following two years he learned and studied in Burma amongst others with Venerable Mahasi Sayadaw Bhaddantasobhana Mahathera.

Venerable Phra Ajarn Tong Sirimangalo was a highly respected meditation teacher in Thailand.

Since early 1980s he has also conducted Vipassana courses in Europe and America. But predominantly he lived and teached in Wat Phradhatu Sri Chom Tong Voravihara near Chiang Mai in Thailand. This is a large and well-known meditation monastery, of which he was the abbot and which has an affiliated international center for foreign meditators. The latter is managed by Khun Thanat and Khun Kathryn Chindaporn.

On December 13, 2019, at the age of 96, our most revered teacher left this world. We are grateful for all the years of teaching and tireless support that the Most Venerable Phra Prom Mongkol Vi has given so generously to so many.

"Ripe I am in years. My life-span´s determined.

Now I go from you, having made myself my refuge.

Monks, be untiring, mindful, disciplined,

Guarding your minds with well-collected thought.

He who, tireless, keeps to law and discipline,

Leaving birth behind will put an end to woe."

(Mahaparinibbana Sutta, Digha Nikaya 16)

Most Venerable Rahatungoda Saddhasumana Bhikkhuni
(Ven. Bhikkhuni Saddhasumana)

The Venerable Bhikkhuni Saddhasumana was born in 1941 and ordained as a nun at the age of 15. At that time, higher ordination as a Bhikkhuni was not yet possible in Sri Lanka.

With the support of her parents, who were practicing Buddhists, she spent several weeks during the summer holidays before her ordination at a meditation center, where the Venerable Mahasi Sayadaw Bhaddantasobhana Mahathera from Myanmar was staying for three months at the time.

She practiced Vipassana meditation with him and was inspired to ordain as a nun.

Later, she continued to practice and meditate regularly under the guidance of a Sinhalese monk who was authorized to teach by the Venerable Mahasi Sayadaw.

In 1998, after more than forty years in robes, she was ordained as a Bhikkhuni in Bodhgaya. This ordination was supported by high-ranking Sinhalese monks, and the candidates were carefully selected and trained in Dambulla many months in advance.

This makes the Venerable Bhikkhuni Saddhasumana one of the most senior Bhikkhunis in Sri Lanka and an officially appointed preceptor (Pavattini).

She is the abbess of Sri Tusitaramaya, a nunnery in Eheliyagoda in the Ratnapura district. She has lived there since 1979. The monastery also has a large Dhamma school where children and young people are regularly taught the Buddha's teachings.

She speaks fluent English and over the years has trained and ordained numerous international women, mainly from Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, but also from Australia and Germany, as Samaneris and Bhikkhunis. She thus plays an important role in the development of fully ordained nuns (Bhikkhunis).

He was a teacher of Satipatthana Vipassana meditation in the Theravada Buddhist tradition of Thailand and was the Director of the International Meditation Department at Wat Phradhatu Sri Chomtong Voravihara, which was established in 2000.

He studied Vipassana meditation with Venerable Ajarn Tong Sirimangalo in the mid 1980s and he began his teaching apprenticeship with late Venerable Phra Banyat Akkayano, the late Director of Thailand's Northern Insight Meditation Centre at Wat Ram Poeng (Tapotaram), Chiang Mai. Since 1988, he has conducted meditation courses in Thailand, Hawaii, America, Canada, Mexico, Columbia, Germany, Spain, Slovenia, France, Israel, India and Nepal.

Since then, Khun Thanat has established 21 Vipassana meditation centers in 14 countries, and there are also other groups and centers under construction.

In 2004 Khun Thanat received Thailand's "Sema Dhammacakka" for his dissemination of Buddhism worldwide.

Khun Thanat passed away on March 31, 2022 at the age of 80. Without his tireless efforts over four decades, Vipassana meditation in the tradition of the Most Venerable Phra Prom Mongkol Vi would not have been accessible to so many international meditators. We always remember him and his work with gratitude and great appreciation!
